OAV 1: Thou Shalt Love Thy Daily Life
Date: May 5th. Hasukawa Kazuya stands outside Ryokuto with a
determined expression on his face. At last he has made it to school! His
only family -- his older brother, Kazuhiro -- has just married Hasukawa's
first love and turned their home into a newlywed's house, so Kazuya is
determined to move out. In the principal's office, the principal
congratulates Hasukawa on leaving the hospital and entering school -- a
month late. Hasukawa has had a string of bad luck: first, he was almost hit
by a car when he came to visit the school, then a blizzard stopped the
subway trains the day of the entrance exam, his acceptance letter was
delayed in the mail, and finally, Kazuya was hospitalized with an ulcer the
day before classes were supposed to start! But Kazuya is determined to
make things work. After all, he doesn't have a home to return to!

Two handsome young men enter the office: Tezuka Shinobu, the Student
Council President, and Ikeda Mitsuru, the Dorm Head of Hasukawa's
dorm. Kazuya notices that Mitsuru looks a lot like Kazuhiro did when he
was young, which leads him to think bitter thoughts about his brother.
(Kazuya once idolized his brother, but now Kazuhiro has destroyed his
ideals! It's unforgiveable!) The two upperclassmen take Hasukawa back
to Ryokurin Ryou, better known as "Greenwood" (because that's easier to
pronounce than "Ryokurin Ryou"), and usher him past the silent throngs of
club recruiters in the entryway. Because Greenwood is a seperate facility
from the rest of the school, the club reps are not allowed to do direct
recruiting (i.e. speak to the dorm residents). Some of them even have tape
over their mouths! A cult member attempts to sell Hasukawa a bible.

Shinobu and Mitsuru escort Kazuya to his room, 210. Hasukawa realizes
he's going to have to share a room. He opens the door and sees a cute,
pink haired girl inside! Embarrassed, he closes the door again. Shinobu
and Mitsuru confide that Hasukawa's roommate, Kisaragi Shun, really is a
girl, and not just a weird boy, as everyone else assumes! They need
Kazuya's help to maintain the fiction that Shun is a boy, because it is
imperative that she graduate from Ryokuto as a male student. A mortified
Hasukawa agrees, to Shun's delight. Mitsuru and Shinobu remind
Hasukawa that the dorm is old and the walls are thin. They live next door
in room 211, and if they hear even a hint of a scream from Shun, Kazuya is
going to regret it! Later that night, Hasukawa lies awake in bed. He
pictures his sister-in-law, Sumire, and then Shun, who is sleeping in the
bunk below him. Dammit! It's the same thing all over again!

The next morning, Shun gives Hasukawa the nickname "Suka-chan" and
makes him wait in bed (which is curtained off) while she changes clothes.
At breakfast Mitsuru offers to tutor Hasukawa, as he's a month behind.

In class, Hasukawa is hopelessly confused. His classmates sympathize
with him for having to live in Greenwood with all the weirdos and
outcasts. They lament that Shun isn't really a girl, because even for a boy's
school, Ryokuto has a dearth of women. Even the infirmary doctor is a
man! Rumor has it that the doctor's gay, too! Enraged, Hasukawa storms
off to the infirmary, where the doctor (his brother, Kazuhiro) has just
discharged a very feminine looking boy (Watanabe). Kazuya smacks
Kazuhiro for being a pervert and proclaims that he and his brother are now
strangers! Kazuhiro used to have guts and ambition! Why is he wasting
his life in a boy's school infirmary? And another thing -- Kazuhiro had
better not break Sumire's heart! Hearing this, Kazuhiro laughs like a
maniac until Kazuya storms off. "God, he's fun to tease," Kazuhiro thinks.
Hasukawa promises himself he won't end up like his brother. He'll walk
the straightest path he can! Entering his room, he sees his female
roommate's beaming face -- and collapses in defeat. Later, he asks Shun
why she doesn't try to be more like a boy. She replies that she'd just mess
up, so she'd prefer to be herself and just have people assume she is a
weirdo. Hasukawa has to sit outside while Shun changes clothes for bed.
Mitsuru notices him there and invites him over for tutoring the next day. In
class, Hasukawa can't concentrate because he's thinking about Shun.

Hasukawa is walking down the hall in the dorm. He enters the bathroom
and sees Shun standing at a urinal. Cover blown, Shun makes a run for it,
but Hasukawa catches him easily. Shun confesses that the scheme was all
Mitsuru and Shinobu's idea! Hasukawa becomes aware that everyone in
the dorm has been wagering on how long it would take him to find out! In
their room, Mitsuru and Shinobu are calculating how much they've won.
Since Kazuya's been a sucker for the past three days (at 18-1 odds),
they've made enough money to throw a proper welcome party for him! An
enraged Hasukawa shows up and flattens Mitsuru with a right hook before
storming off. Shinobu remarks: "I told you he's not the type to take a joke
well." Mitsuru replies: "Nice punch. I like him." (In the manga, Shinobu
then says: "Oh? Are you a masochist?" and laughs. ^_^)

Date: July 7th. Mitsuru is tutoring Hasukawa and smacking him with a
rolled up magazine when he gets the answers wrong. Kazuya protests
("Please don't feel so free to hit me!"), but Mitsuru reminds him that his
tutoring helped Hasukawa do well on midterms. Shinobu tells Mitsuru to
take it easy on Hasukawa, because Kazuya is a "delicate boy" who got an
ulcer during entrance exams. Hasukawa denies that his ulcer was due to
exam stress, but won't tell the real reason. (Sumire-chan!)

Hasukawa muses that Greenwood really is full of weirdos. For example,
Shun, who looks just like a girl; Furusawa-sempai, who lives with his
motorcycle in his room; Aoki and Sakaguchi, who run a profitble video
arcade in their room; and Bonda-sempai, who has religious meetings in
his! Hasukawa is counting the days 'til summer break when everyone but
him will go home!

At breakfast, Mitsuru sits next to Hasukawa, who makes a face. "You're
welcome to sit somewhere else," Hasukawa mutters, guarding his tray.
"I'm welcome to sit wherever I want!" Mitsuru replies, and steals food
from Hasukawa. Shun comments on how much Mitsuru eats, and he
replies that it takes a lot of energy to maintain a face like his!

The term is over! Hasukawa's teacher compliments him on how well he's
done, considering his late start. Shun leaves for home. An ecstatic
Hasukawa looks forward to peace and quiet at last! But, what's this?
Mitsuru and Shinobu are staying, too?! Mitsuru moves close to Shinobu as
if to kiss him, and says: "And here I thought the two of us would finally be
alone. . ." Shinobu replies:"You'd better cut it out. Hasukawa's eyes are
going to pop out of his head." "Aw, he can't take a joke."

19 people have filed for summer stay, but that's not very many in a dorm
that holds 200. Hasukawa and his neighbors are bored. Mitsuru "invites"
Hasukawa to take a bath with him and Shinobu by stepping on Hasukawa's
surgery scar until he agrees. In the bath, Hasukawa admits he didn't go
home for summer vacation because he didn't want to be a bother to his
brother and new sister-in-law. Mitsuru and Shinobu scold him for
"missing a chance" (whatever that means!) and for being cliche enough to
fall for his brother's wife. Hasukawa finds out that Mitsuru lives in Tokyo
(close enough to commute) and doesn't actually need to live in the dorms.
Hasukawa rants that Mitsuru's presence in the dorm causes him a lot of
trouble, and Mitsuru replies by pouring water over Kazuya's head.

Sumire comes walking up to the dorm. Shinobu politely tells the dorm
lady he'll "take care of it" and walks into the PA room, which is next to the
drink machine where Hasukawa is standing. As Hasukawa takes a sip,
Shinobu's voice comes over the PA: "Room 210, Hasukawa-kun, your
sister-in-law is here to visit". Hasukawa spits his drink everywhere.
Shinobu sticks his head out of the PA room, still broadcasting, and says:
"Oh, there you are, Hasukawa." Bored residents flock to the visiting room
to ogle Hasukawa's pretty sister-in-law! Sumire jumps up and embraces
Kazuya, scolding him for not coming home, and he immediately gets a
bloody nose. Thrusting her away, he dashes out of the room. Shinobu
remarks to Mitsuru that Sumire must be the cause of Hasukawa's ulcer.
Sumire sits alone in the visiting room, thinking: "Maybe he was opposed to
our marriage." Hasukawa is washing his face in the bathroom but realizes
with horror that Sumire is alone with his sempai! They're probably telling
her all sorts of weird things about him! He dashes back, but everyone is
gone except Mitsuru and Shinobu. Kazuya asks them what they told
Sumire, and Mitsuru replies that they said Hasukawa had to take summer
classes to avoid failing. . . oh, and that he had diarrhea last night. . . Any
problem with that? Although this isn't the most elegant excuse, Hasukawa
is grateful. He realizes he has to forget Sumire-chan quickly, or he'll never
be able to go home!

Date: Aug 8th. Only one more day of vacation. Shun returns. In 211 the
boys share a beer and tell the returnees about Hasukawa's beautiful sister-
in-law. Too bad she's wasted on that infirmary doctor, eh? Kazuya
retorts: "It's none of my business! Anyway, it's not like we're brothers!"

Date: Sept 9th. Mitsuru is lying in an infirmary bed. Kazuhiro inquires
how Mitsuru's "supposed illness" is doing and asks how Kazuya is.
Mitsuru says Kazuya is avoiding Kazuhiro because the doctor is "ragging
on him" and Kazuhiro admits he does it just because Kazuya's reactions
are so cute! Mitsuru wonders how a man who thinks his own brother is
cute could have married a normal woman, and then tells Kazuhiro what
happened when Sumire visited. Being a doctor, Kazuhiro knows what the
nosebleed means. Kazuhiro confronts Kazuya and tells him not to come
home for a while. Kazuya exclaims he won't come home until graduation!
Even if they want him to! He means it!

Date: Dec 12th. At breakfast Hasukawa declares that he's not going home
for winter break either. Mitsuru chuckles evilly and tells him "Oh, yes,
you are going home!" It turns out that the dorm is closed over winter
break! Hasukawa is stunned. He doesn't have anywhere else to stay!

Mitsuru brings Hasukawa a package from the infirmary doctor with the
message: "Sumire wants to know when you're coming home". Inside the
package is a warm padded jacket that Sumire made and a note encouraging
Hasukawa to come home for the holidays. A tortured Kazuya buries his
face in the jacket and wails: "Sumire no baka!" as the others comment on
how cruel she is to not notice the effect she has on her brother-in-law.

Shun and Hasukawa are in the tub. (Shun's got his hair in odango!) Shun
asks if Hasukawa has other family to stay with and Kazuya replies he
doesn't have any! Kazuya falls into despair, mumbling to himself about
sneaking back into the dorm after everyone's left -- but what'll he do
without heat?! Later, a dazed Hasukawa is almost lured into the cultists'
room, but Shun stops him in time. "Get a grip!" Shun cries, shaking him.

In 211, Shinobu and Mitsuru are discussing Hasukawa's situation. Shinobu
asks Mitsuru what he's going to do about it, since Mitsuru is the dorm
head. Mitsuru says it's no good to be soft on Hasukawa if they're trying to
toughen him up enough to be dorm head next year. Shinobu wonders:
"How long will this last?" To which Mitsuru replies: "He'll be fine."
Shinobu says: "No. I meant you." Mitsuru is startled.

Lying in his bed that night, Shun offers to let Hasukawa stay at his house
during winter break. Hasukawa flashes back to the time when Sumire
asked him if it would be all right for her to become "Mrs. Hasukawa". He
says: "Shun, I'm going home." Mitsuru, who was standing outside debating
whether to knock on Hasukawa's door, hears him and returns to his room.

Shinobu is sitting at the table studying when Mitsuru returns. "What, no
business to take care of next door?" Shinobu asks. "It's all right," Mitsuru
says, flopping down on Shinobu's bed. Mitsuru realizes Shinobu is poking
fun at him and beans him in the head with a kleenex box. "Are you gonna
wipe that smile off your face?" Shinobu smiles at Mitsuru and says: "Suki
da ze, Mitsuru." (Note: This could mean: "I like you, Mitsuru" or "I love
you, Mitsuru", or maybe even "It's love, Mitsuru". Many people would
like to know what Shinobu meant when he said this!)

Mitsuru and Hasukawa are the last to leave the dorm for winter break.

Outside his house, Hasukawa takes a deep breath before entering. "I'm
home!" Sumire-chan is so excited! She's made a huge feast for Kazuya.
As Sumire chatters on about how hard she worked to make food just for
him and how she wants everyone to go to her parents' house for New
Years', Hasukawa weeps. "It's good to be home!"

Credits.

Date: Jan 1st. Hasukawa stands in front of the dorm. Even though he's only
been gone 10 days, he's missed the place. This is where he feels he
belongs, because "here" is. . . Here is. . . greenwood.
