Blood Type: A
Height: 161 cm (~5' 4")
Weight: 48 kg (~106 lbs)

History:
Hasukawa is an orphan. He was raised by his older brother, Kazuhiro,
who also attended Ryokuto Gakuen. As a child, Hasukawa idolized his brother and wanted to enroll at Ryokuto to be more like him. Sadly, all of the personality traits Kazuya prized in his brother (drive, determination, and ambition) have seemingly disappeared. To make matters worse, Hiro has just married Kazuya's first love, Sumire-chan! Unable to live in the same house as the now-frivolous Hiro and his bride, Kazuya moves into the dorms. Little does he know what terrors await him there!
Personality:
Hasukawa is a serious-minded boy. He has occasional flare-ups of
temper, usually when someone is making fun of him or threatening someone he cares about. Kazuya's internalization of his emotional turmoil caused him to perforate a stess-induced ulcer brought on by his former living situation. Hasukawa is extremely loyal and dependable -- two qualities which likely influenced Mitsuru's decision to make Kazuya dorm head in his second year. His feelings are easily hurt, which makes him considerate of others' feelings, and he can be quite stubborn.
Appearance:
A short, slight boy with red hair and pink eyes. Hasukawa's expression is
often serious and intense. He is capable of smiling and laughing, but doesn't get to indulge much since the others are often picking on him!
Special Abilities/Points of Interest:
Hasukawa can run like the wind! His exact top speed is unknown, but he
can easily catch Shun, who claims to run 100 meters in 12 seconds. Hasukawa is the fastest boy on the track team.
When angry, Hasukawa has an unstoppable right hook, with which he has
flattened both Mitsuru (anime and manga) and Shinobu (manga only). Hasukawa's berserker nature also caused him to attack Nagisa's henchmen in volume two of the manga when Mitsuru was being held captive.
Strong emotion appears to make Hasukawa physically ill. To paraphrase
Shinobu in OAV 6: "It's a rare man who gets an actual fever from lovesickness" -- but that's exactly what Kazuya does! Also, immediately after the boys rescue Mitsuru from Nagisa, Hasukawa develops a fever and collapses. (Mitsuru has to carry him back to the dorm.)
In manga volume 3, episode 2 ("Poolside Boyfriend") we learn that
Hasukawa is a poor swimmer.
He's not very good at ping pong, either.
Or singing. *sweatdrop*
Hasukawa's luck with the opposite sex is notoriously bad. He also gets
nosebleeds easily. (In anime, the nosebleed indicates a certain amount of -- err. . . excitement. . . in young men who are inexperienced with women.)
Imo-girl Recommends:
If you like Hasukawa because. . .
. . .he's a hot-head with a heart of gold, see Ginta (Marmalade Boy).
. . .he can run like the wind but can't seem to figure out the opposite sex,
get a load of Kanzaki Hitomi (Tenkuu no Escaflowne).
. . .he's a normal boy with weird sempai, try Keiichi (Aa! Megamisama!).
. . .his aggrieved squawks are cute, listen to Yuusuke (Yu Yu Hakusho),
Eram (Arslan Senki) or Madoushi Clef (Magic Knight Rayearth TV). |

Relationships:
Hasukawa has a love-hate relationship with both his brother and Mitsuru.
In fact, I think some of his troubles with his sempai stem from the fact that Mitsuru looks so much like Kazuhiro. It doesn't help that both of them like to bug Kazuya because he's so easy to get a rise out of. However, even though they make him so angry he feels compelled to bash them (with briefcases, chairs, tables, etc.) he's still willing to defend both of them against all comers, whether they be Nagisa's nameless henchmen or Sumire's smarmy cousin.
Deep down inside, Hasukawa fears Shinobu -- and who can blame him?
Shinobu can be extremely scary. Despite that, Hasukawa will still stand up to his sempai if he feels there's an injustice being committed, and I think Shinobu respects him for it, however unwillingly.
Hasukawa and Shun are pals. I'm not sure if Kazuya had a crush on Shun
when he thought Shun was a girl, but it's probable. In any event, Kazuya is often exasperated by his happy roommate, (especially when Shun is too busy doing his hair to notice that Kazuya has overslept) but can't help but like him. I don't think anyone could dislike Shun. Unless they were evil.
Why I Worship:
Hasukawa is worthy of love and adoration because he's a rarity in anime:
the real life hero. He's not stunningly gorgeous or gifted with supernatural powers (like some sempai I could mention). He's not an inexplicable chick magnet like Tenchi. The fate of the known universe doesn't rest on his shoulders. He doesn't have a foreordained destiny, and he'd have the common sense to stay the *Hell away* from a giant robot if he came across one. (Unless it were hurting his friends, in which case he'd have to kick its ass!) No, Hasukawa's just a decent kid with some not-so-unusual personal problems, a strong sense of right and wrong, and a bunch of annoying friends (whom he puts up with admirably). Sure, he gets crabby sometimes, but who doesn't? And when you're up to your ass in alligators he'll do his darndest to get you out again. There's a little Hasukawa in all of us -- or a lot, if we're being honest with ourselves. That's why seeing him win in the end is so utterly sweet. |
