Translation thirteen. Corrections are welcome.
Can you believe we're over a quarter of the way through the manga?
This is the first Devilwood story. It's pretty much covered in OAV three apart from a few scenes with Nagisa
and Nitta Mieko. Not much new here, but it was a quick translation to do and I'm a bit stuck on the others at the moment. *sweatdrop*
Anyway, enjoy!

Extra! Here is Devilwood
Narr: Once upon a time. . .
Nasu Yukie: It's sudden, but this is an extra.
Narr: . . .there was a peaceful and beautiful kingdom.
Nasu Yukie: It's entitled the public service hero series. [?]
(*)
[Title page: Lemon Herb and Tino ready for action.]
(*)
Narr: One year, a prince was born to the king and queen of that country.
Narr: The king and queen, of course, as well as the prince's older sister, Princess Chelsea, and the others in
the castle were overjoyed. Throughout the kingdom the people blessed the beautiful prince's birthday.
Narr: However, only the selfish second princess Mirukii. . .
[Mirukii is fuming to herself in the nursery.]
Mirukii (Reina): What's the big deal? Everyone's going: "A prince! A prince!"
(*)
Mirukii: I'm much cuter than *him*! The prince is just a round thing, the same as a manju! That's right! The
*prince* – the *prince*. . . I wish he'd turn into a manju and get eaten by a demon or something!
Narr: At that moment!
Ominous voice: Your words have been heard!
Mirukii: Eh?
Ladies' voices: The prince! The prince! He's –
[The ladies rush to see the king.]
Ladies: It's terrible! The prince suddenly turned into a round, brown thing!
Ladies: And then a pitch black bird appeared and flew off with it somewhere!
(*)
King (Kazuhiro): That's ridiculous!
Majordomo (Tochizawa): Your Majesty! This was in the prince's cradle!
[The majordomo hands the king a note.]
King: Thi- this is –
Note: Dear Sir or Madam,
I heard the compassionate little princess' wish and helped myself to the prince.
Sincerely,
the Devil Lord Cloretts
Narr: DEVIL LORD!!
[The king drops the note in shock. Chelsea faints.]
Narr: It was said that in the kingdom's far westernmost reaches a frightful devil lord lived in a place called
Devilwood. However, there was no one who had ever seen the devil lord.
(*)
Narr: The king soon had pamphlets dropped throughout the kingdom in order to summon a hero to defeat the
devil lord and save the prince.
Pamphlet: Emergency! Devil lord killers wanted! Must be 15 years old or older to apply.
Narr: However, everyone was terrified of the devil lord and no one volunteered.
Narr: The queen took to her bed out of sorrow. [Translation?]
Narr: Then. . .
Majordomo: Your Majesty!
Majordomo: A person who says he'll go defeat the devil lord has suddenly appeared outside the gate!
King: [Sitting up in bed] What!?
Sitting up suddenly FX: GABA!
King: [Going out to the hall] Is that the one calling himself the devil lord defeater? Who are you?
(*)
Herb (Mitsuru): Yashuumushuku Lemon Herb.
King: Lemon Herb?! The one who's said to have KO'd the giant of Domu Mountain in five minutes forty-two
seconds?!
Narr: The young man had made a name for himself as a hero. The king entrusted the him with all the
preparations for the journey.
King: I shall give you this boy to be your squire.
Tino (Hasukawa): Tino is my name.
King: Use him as hard as you like if it will bring the prince back one moment sooner!
King: If you are successful, I will not only give you whatever treasure you desire, but. . .
(*)
King: I will also give you my daughter Chelsea's hand in marriage and leave you this castle!
Herb: . . .
Herb: Well, anyway –
King: What do you mean "anyway"?
Herb: I will defeat the devil lord and return the prince without fail!
Narr: The two courageous young men began their adventure.
(*)
[As they walk, Tino seems depressed.]
Tino: [Sighing] Haa –
Herb: Hey!
Tino: Haa –
Herb: Hey! You!
Herb: Don't suddenly sigh like that! We haven't even gone the first Ri of our jouney!
Tino: I'm tense. . .
Tino: Our enemy is a *devil lord*! A DEVIL LORD!
Tino: Plus, there's just the two of us! How are we supposed to fight him? We're not going to come back alive!
(*)
Tino: It's questionable whether we'll even get to Devilwood safely! We don't even have a map!
Herb: You knew that, and yet you volunteered! Why?!
Tino: Well. . . that is . . .
Tino: I couldn't stand to see the Queen's sorrowful figure. . .
Herb: Right. So be a man for the lady's sake.
Tino: I didn't think I'd be the only one to volunteer!
Herb: Think of it as your share of the reward being bigger.
Herb: Furthermore, if things go well, you'll become the queen's son-in-law.
Tino: That doesn't make me happy.
Herb: Anyway, we've left on our journey, so it's no use complaining now.
Herb: Don't space out.
[There's a sudden rustle in the bushes.]
(*)
|
|
Bandit Chief (Marui): Gimme all yer money!
[Herb has disarmed the bandit chief. The other bandits are nonplussed.]
Tino: [Startled] When did all these guys appear? I have no idea.
[Herb and Tino go on their way, leaving the unconscious bandits behind.]
Narr: The journey was trying and difficult. The two walked through the mountains and uncharted wilderness.
Narr: As they fought bandits and monsters, their journey continued westward toward the place called
Devilwood.
[Herb and Tino come to a rushing river.]
Tino: It seems useless to try to swim across.
River FX: GO~
(*)
Herb: Nothing for it. We'll have to make a detour. Huh?
[A ferry boat landing has caught his attention.]
Herb: There're ferry boats over there?
Ferryman's wife's voice: Oh! I'm sorry! Right now the ferries aren't running!
Tino and Herb: Eh?!
Tino: No way! How inconvenient!
Ferryman's wife (Kawasumiya Yuuko): Our business is increasing, so we're in trouble, too!
Ferryman's wife: Do you see that little island? The landing for the ferries is on the other side.
Ferryman's wife: Recently, a monster has started living on that island. It sings a mysterious song that sinks
passing boats.
(*)
Ferryman's wife: Because the current is so fast here, if you fall in you can't be rescued. More than ten people
have already died.
Tino: Monster. . .
Herb: If that's the case, it's simple.
Herb: If you give me a boat, I'll get rid of that monster for you!
Tino: Wait! Let's hang on for a moment! That's not necessary!
Herb: Too bad!
[The ferryman comes out of the back room.]
Ferryman (Furusawa): Since you say that, I'll lend you a boat. Come on.
Ferryman's wife: Oh! Dear!
[Herb and Tino get into the tiny boat with the ferryman.]
Ferryman: I really don't mind the monster, but if just one boat stays in business the union will complain.
Ferryman: Hang on!
Ferry FX: ZAN!
(*)
Tino: Ah!
Ferryman: Hey, you can hear it.
Ferryman: When you hear it, even if you don't think you'll get close to the island –
Ferryman: By itself, the boat turns toward the island. And then. . .
Wave FX: ZABUN
Herb: Wa! Wa!
Ferryman: You strike that steep rock and sink!
[They've safely reached the island.]
Ferryman: Well, depending on the arms of the captain.
Waves lapping FX: Zabu zabu
(*)
Ferryman: I'll stay here and watch the boat! Take care!
Herb: Thanks a lot!
[Herb and Tino climb.]
Tino: You can hear the sound coming from the top of that cliff!
Herb: Yeah. . . . but. . .
Herb: That's . . . not a song. . .
Tino: You're right! What's it saying?
Herb: "Help"? [Sweatdrop]
Voice: Help mee ~
(*)
[A mermaid is sitting at the top of the cliff. She looks wilted.]
Mermaid (Nitta Mieko): Haa . . . haa. . .
Mermaid:[Seeing our heroes] Wa. . . water. . .
Herb: Hey.
Tino: I'll go get some!
[Tino gets some river water and pours it over the mermaid's head.]
Water FX: BASHA [Splash!]
(*)
Mermaid: Thank you very much. A little longer and I would have died. . .
Mermaid: I am a mermaid that lives in this area. One night a large storm passed. . .
Mermaid: I was swept up in a whirlwind and carried to this stony island.
Mermaid: For a while I endured in the collected rainwater, but though I called for help, no one struggled up
here.
Mermaid: Please return me to the water, somehow.
Tino: What should we do? After all, she *is* a mermaid. If she feels better, she may try something evil. . .
Herb: Yeah. . . but in this kind of case. . .
(*)
Herb: (I can expect her to repay me!)
[Herb picks up the mermaid.]
Mermaid: Oh, what a nice person! [Heart]
[Herb drops the mermaid into the river.]
River FX: DOBON! [Bloosh!]
Mermaid: Thank you so much! I can breathe again! Wait there a moment, okay?
Herb: [Chuckling] Fu fu fu
[The mermaid resurfaces.]
Resurfacing FX: ZABO
Mermaid: [Holding out a jewel.] Please accept this token!
(*)
Mermaid: This is a water purifier called a "mermaid's life." You can use it to turn any liquid into drinking water.
Mermaid: I also have these.
Arrow: Okishigamu
[The mermaid and ferryman wave goodbye.]
Ferryman: Take care –
Narr: The heroes took their leave of the ferryman and the mermaid.
Narr: While defeating monsters and bandits, they continued their journey.
[Herb takes some defeated bandits' money. He beheads a wolf and sells the skin.]
Herb: How much will you pay?
Trader (Sakaguchi): It's a fine pelt! How about 1000?
Herb: Cheapskate!
(*)

|
[They come to an inn.]
Herb: Mistress! Good food and wine! Do you have a room?
Innkeeper (Aki): Welcome! Yes, on the second floor.
Tino: It's just oihagi.
Waitress 1 (Marua): Welcome.
Herb: Wait. We'd like to ask you something.
Waitress 1: Oh? And what is it?
Herb: We're going to Devilwood. Is it far from here?
[The waitress drops her tray in shock. Everyone in the room stares.]
Tray FX: KARA-N [Clang!]
Waitress 1: Devilwood. . .
(*)
Waitress 1: Why do you say you're going to such a frightful place?
Waitress 2 (Ririko): Please! Stop! You'll die!
Waitress 2: Don't go! [She glomps Herb and sobs into his chest.] WAA!
Innkeeper: If it's Devilwood you want, you're close. However. . .
Innkeeper: All the trees of that forest are enchanted. It's like a maze. Not one person who has gone into that
place has returned safely.
Narr: The two of them struggled on until they reached the town closest to Devilwood.
(*)
[Herb and Tino are sharing a room. Herb watches Tino from his bed.]
Herb: Are you afraid? It's fine if you want to stay here.
Tino: I'm going, too! I've already come this far!
Herb: Well, as you like.
[Tino gets into bed.]
Tino: Herb-san. Why'd you get into this dangerous line of work?
Herb: My country isn't really very rich. They probably couldn't pay me enough to live on.
(*)
Herb: The truth is. . . the matter of the prince was coincidental.
Herb: He. . . the devil lord Cloretts. . . His real name is Cool Mint.
Herb: He was my childhood friend.
Tino: EH?!
Herb: He and I grew up in the same village. We became the apprentices of the same sorcerer.
[Pic of Herb and Cool as children carrying a bucket together.]
Herb: However, one day a black sorcerer appeared and burned our village to the ground. He also killed our
master. Cool, in order to become a stronger magic user, became the apprentice of the black sorcerer. He disappeared. I chose the path of the sword.
(*)
Herb: I heard a rumor that the black sorcerer died, but *he* –
Herb: I must kill Cool with my own hands.
[The next day.]
Waitress 1: Take care!
Waitress: Come back, okay?
Inkeeper: Bless them.
Herb: It'll be fine. Mazes are difficult if you get flustered. If you proceed calmly, the way will open.
Herb: Or something. . .
(*)
|
|
Tino: We're lost, aren't we?
[Herb is striding around quickly.]
Herb FX: Zun zun zun zun
Herb: Um. This maze reflects his character well.
[Much later, Tino collapses against a tree.]
Tino: I can't go on any longer!
Herb: Hang in there!
Tino: It's futile! Even though we've been walking and walking. . . And all our water is gone. Ah~ we're
doomed!
Herb: Hm.
[Herb gets a sudden idea.]
Herb: Tino, climb this tree!
Tino: Eh?
Herb: From the top of the tree you can see for a long distance.
[Tino is clinging to the top of a tall pine tree.]
Herb: [Calling from below] Well, how is it? Can you see anything?
Tino: Herb-san!
(*)
Tino: There's nothing! I don't see a castle anywhere! Only forest as far as the eye can see!
Herb: That's not how it's supposed to be! Damn him! He's using camouflaging magic.
Herb: Fine then! How about water? Don't you see a river or lake somewhere?
Tino: Uh – Ah! Over there! Close by there's a place without trees! Maybe. . .
[The two reach the side of a pond.]
Herb?: There it is! Water!
(*)
Herb: But, it's kinda. . .
Tino: This water is filthy.
Dirty water FX: Donyari [Gray/cloudy]
Herb: Right! I'll put the thing we got from the mermaid into the flask. . .
[They drink.]
Herb and Tino FX: Goku goku goku goku goku [Glug glug glug glug glug]
Herb: Refreshing!
Contented sigh FX: Puha
Herb: Well, then. . . shall we go?
Water spirit's voice: Hold it, you!
Rising out of the water FX: ZABAA
(*)
Water spirit (Nagisa): What kind of monsters are you?! This pond's water turns the humans who drink it into
fish – and we salt grill them! Yet you gulp it down and are still walking around!
Herb: Who the hell are you?
Water spirit: Be silent!
Water spirit: I am the queen of this forest.
Herb: Queen of the forest?!
Tino: So then, this woman is the devil lord?
Herb: [To the water spirit] You've become a transvestite?
Water spirit: Insolent wretch!
(*)
Water spirit: I don't care why these humans haven't changed! TEAR THEM LIMB FROM LIMB!
[Kappas in suits and dark glasses rise out of the water. >_< Guess who they are.]
Rising out of the water FX: Zabaa
[Herb and Tino draw their weapons.]
Weapon FX: ZA!
[The kappas are down for the count.]
Kappas falling down FX: BATA BATA BATA
Herb: Weaklings!
Water spirit: . . .
[The water spirit submerges herself in the pond.]
Herb: Ah! Wait!
(*)
[The heroes swim after the water spirit.]
Water spirit: Why are you still all right? This water is poisonous!
Herb: [Pointing underwater at the mermaid's life] Ha ha! Because of this!
Water spirit: Geh! A mermaid's life?!
Water spirit: S- stop! If you put that thing in this water. . . It hurts!
Kappa 1 (Man A): Please, I beg you! Take that out of here and we'll give you our treasure.
(*)
Kappa 2 (Man D): Omisore itashimashita.
Kappa 3 (Man B): [Bowing] We can only live in this poisonous pool. Please overlook this.
[Herb is wearing new armor and Tino holds a shortsword.]
Kappa 1: They suit you.
Tino: What the heck is this?
Kappa 1: They're magic. That's the defensive sword and this is assault armor.
Herb: Contradictory names, huh?
Kappa 1: From the beginning our queen was this forest's ruler, but Cloretts selfishly built a castle and made
our lake into this small pond.
Kappa 1: Somehow vanquish Cloretts, I beg you! From here his castle is straight in the direction of the
setting sun a half day's journey.
(*)
[Herb and Tino set off again.]
Tino: But the castle may not really be there!
Herb: Well, anyway, let's look. If we don't keep going until sunset in these parts. . . who knows what
monsters will come out at night?
[A huge paw comes out of the bushes in front of Herb's face.]
Paw FX: ZA!
[The paw is followed by the rest of the three-eyed bear. Herb pushes Tino out of the way.]
[The bear goes for Herb's face.]
Herb: (Too late!)
[Blood falls on the ground.]
Blood FX: Bota bota
Herb: N – Now I get it.
(*)
[Blades are sticking out of Herb's armor in all directions. One has gone through the bear's head and killed it.]
Herb: "Assault armor". . .
Armor FX: JAKKIN!
[Cut to a marble palace.]
Imp voice: Ki. . . ki. . .
Cool's voice: What is it? You're so noisy.
Imp: Kii kii kii
Cool: What?. . .
[The imp has landed on Cool's finger.]
Imp: Kiki kikiki
Cool: Is that so? . . . They're coming straight for the castle?
(*)
Cool: [Smiling slightly] How like you, Herb.
[Cut to Herb and Tino.]
Tino: [Slashing with his sword] DAAAAAA!
(*)
|
|
[Tino has dispatched some sort of giant reptile. Herb has a big bird skewered on his arm.]
Herb: [Clapping] Splendid! You're improving, aren't you?
Tino: Please don't clap with that thing hanging off your arm!
Herb: We can eat him. Look!
[Later, around the campfire. . .]
Tino: This sword seems to move on its own to counter opponents' blows.
Herb: That's why it's a "defensive sword."
Tino: Is it really all right to believe what those monsters said? Maybe they're just trying to get us lost deeper in
the forest. . .
Herb: It's all right. The castle is close. I know from the atmosphere.
Herb: Furthermore, if I do this. . .
[Herb draws his sword. . .]
(*)
[. . . and skewers a giant praying mantis that was looming over him from behind.]
Mantis twitching FX: Kashi kashi
[Herb drinks unconcernedly.]
Drinking FX: Su su
[The heroes continue on their way.]
Herb: The markedly increasing number of monsters is proof more than anything. The maze is becoming
increasingly crafty, too.
Breaking branch FX: Baki
Tino: Herb-san! That sound!
Unknown sound FX: Za. . . za. . . za. . .
Herb: What is it?
Tino: It's like the sound of waves, but. . .
Herb: Let's go look!
Herb: We've emerged! It's a clearing!
(*)
Tino: Ah!?
[Herb and Tino run to the edge of a cliff. A single castle spire sticks up from below.]
Herb: There. . . it is. . .
(*)
[The castle rises up from the darkness far below.]
(*)
Wind FX: Hyururi
[The heroes crouch at the edge of the cliff.]
Herb: Somehow, he made this sprout up.
Tino: Now what?
Herb: We're going. I've decided.
Tino: How?!
Herb: By climbing down the cliff. Look for a place that appears climbable. There must be a way connecting to
the castle down there.
(*)
[Herb and Tino start climbing down the cliff face.]
Herb: They can see all around from the castle, though.
Tino: (Sure enough. . . That castle has an evil aura.)
Tino: (It's pitch black down there. . . Like we're descending into Hell. . .)
